Country’s First ZLD-Based CSTP at An Economic Zone
Updated on January 1, 2026
A Landmark Achievement by Water Technology BD Limited (WTBL)
Water Technology BD Limited (WTBL) is proud to announce the successful development and commissioning of the country’s first Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD)–based Central Sewage Treatment Plant (CSTP) at the Meghna Industrial Economic Zone (MIEZ). This milestone project sets a new benchmark for sustainable industrial infrastructure in Bangladesh by ensuring 100% reuse of treated sewage water generated from all industries within the Economic Zone.Project Overview
The CSTP has been designed and implemented with a treatment capacity of 360 KLD, addressing the collective sewage load of the industrial units operating within the zone. Unlike conventional sewage treatment systems that discharge treated effluent into nearby water bodies, this CSTP follows a true ZLD philosophy, where no treated water is discharged outside the system.Instead, the treated water is fully recovered and reused within the Economic Zone for non-potable applications such as:
- Utility and process water support
- Greenbelt irrigation
- Washing and ancillary industrial uses
World-Class Technologies for Consistent Performance
To ensure robust, stable, and energy-efficient treatment, WTBL partnered with two globally recognized technology leaders:- MUTAG (Germany) – Advanced Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) media for high-rate biological treatment, process stability, and superior organic load removal.
- DuPont – High-performance Ultrafiltration (UF) membrane systems for consistent solid–liquid separation, low turbidity effluent, and reliable reuse quality.
- Stable treatment under variable hydraulic and organic loading
- Excellent effluent quality suitable for reuse
- Lower sludge generation compared to conventional systems
Energy-Efficient and Cost-Effective Design
Sustainability was a core design principle of this CSTP. The system has been engineered to achieve:- Lower electricity consumption through optimized aeration and process hydraulics
- Reduced operational and maintenance costs due to simplified process control and durable media
- High process reliability with minimal operator intervention
- Consistent treatment performance throughout seasonal and load fluctuations
Supporting Sustainable Industrial Development
The ZLD-based CSTP directly supports:- Environmental compliance with national and international standards
- Water conservation in water-stressed industrial regions
- Long-term sustainability of the Meghna Industrial Economic Zone
- Bangladesh’s transition toward circular water management in industrial estates
A Proud Milestone for WTBL
This project reflects WTBL’s 17+ years of expertise in designing and delivering advanced water and wastewater treatment solutions. The successful implementation of the 360 KLD ZLD-CSTP at Meghna Industrial Economic Zone reinforces our commitment to:- Innovation-driven engineering
- Environmental stewardship
- Sustainable industrial growth
